I talk a little bit about Stone of Tears in Part 1, and The Black Company in Part 2.
The Chronicles of the Black Company isn’t one story, one plot, Cook manages 3 unique stories, 3 unique plots, that all tie down to make the main plot arch strong and interesting.
By themselves the books are ok, they’re interesting but have flaws. Cooks amazing talent is to make everything come together, turn the flaws into strengths and write a compelling story about imperfection.
The Chronicles of the Black Company is a very solid fantasy series and one that can easily recommend… all you have to do is make it pas the first 100 pages or so. Read below.
Ratings:
The Black Company
1st book of the Chronicles of the Black Company
Plot:8
Characters:8
Premise of conflict:6
Resolution of conflict:4
Setting:7
Writing:6
Style:3
Overall rating:5
Pros:
-Mercenaries don’t have morals, but people do.
-Soulcatcher is an awesome character, my favorite in the Chronicles, Raven’s character has great potential.
-It’s fun when the group of lowly mercenaries are good enough to outsmart the more powerful wizard figures.
-The perspective is unique, the heros in this story are fighting for the bad guys. The main character Croaker is having a bit of a moral dilemma about this.
-This mercenary story is has enough depth to be unique and interesting.
Cons:
-The writing style is atrocious, disjointed and reads like bland military report. This is really frustrating until the reader realizes it is a military report.
-For all the battles the action is kind of left out.
-The action sequences probably could have used more description, but on the plus side the way Cook crafted the action in relationships with the characters was marvelously clever.
-The conflict isn’t one that can really be understood within the plot of the first book and so the conflict resolution doesn’t really come into grasp of the reader.
-Your investment as a reader doesn’t really start to pay off until after your well into the book.
-It’s a good thing the book contains Shadow’s Linger and White rose, because in the end The Chronicles of the Black company pays off.
Ratings:
Shadow’s Linger
2nd Book in the Chronicles of the Black Company.
Plot: 8
Characters: 8
Premise of Conflict:7
Resolution of Conflict:9
Settings:4
Writing:6
Style: 6
Overall:7.5
Pros:
-You really start getting the feeling for Cooks talent to write unique and different characters.
-The 2nd book also proves Cooks ability to write a solid plot, because very little of the story in Shadow’s deals with the mercenary band… but I didn’t feel like the older characters have been abandoned.
-In fact he did a really good job separating plots while tying into the base story line.
-By the end of Shadow’s Linger I wasn’t going to put the book down.
-The demise of the Black Company was intriguing and I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.
-The book flows more into the prose most readers are used too. Makes the book much easier to read.
-Overall I was amazed at the way Cook was able to separate story lines and still masterfully tie it all back together in the end.
Cons:
-Reader doesn’t get to read about characters he/she has already been introduced too. I don’t see this as a bad thing but it can be for the readers who wants a tightly connected fantasy series.
-Oddly enough the plot doesn’t take us to many new settings and the descriptions of castles and dark corners are largely not described. Cook starts to rely on the readers imagination to make the settings dark, mysterious and magical. Thus the settings can be amazing or dismally lack luster.
-The writing is better and the style flows better than the 1st book. But again I think Cook relies a little too much on the reader to fill in the descriptive details.
Ratings:
The White Rose
Book 3 of the Chronicles of the Black Company Trilogy.
Plot:7
Characters:7
Premise of Conflict:8
Resolution of Conflict:8
Settings:7
Writing:8
Style:7
Overall:8
Pros:
-The way the premise of the conflict is revealed, slowly changes, and then is resolved makes the Chronicles of the Black Company an easy recommendation and a great fantasy series.
-Writing and style both continue to improve.
-The way the plot plays out with Croaker receiving letters from an anonymous source is a bit annoying but in the end, I think, makes the story better.
-I think Cook improves his descriptions of the different settings of the book, making the mantas backs more imposing, and the desert crystal coral more vibrant… so-on and so-on.
Cons:
-For the first half I felt the plot was a little stagnate out of feeling the like the mercenary group was stuck.
-The characters aren’t as good, the readers connection with the White Rose is so-so and the reintroduction with Raven is a bit of a disappointment. However, the depth of Lady’s character continues to improve.
